"Vegas, baby. Vegas"

The Beer Retard is headed to Las Vegas for the weekend. It'll be my first time in Vegas and it's thanks to [info]absintheavcscre. He lives there and that gives me an opportunity to experience the town in a different way than if I was staying at some hotel on the Strip. As you might imagine, beer will be the focus of my weekend (along with hanging with my host and finding out what he's been up to of late). Surprisingly (to me), Las Vegas has plenty of beer options. My research has uncovered brewpubs like Big Dog's, Chicago and Boulder Dam. There are also beer bars, the main one being The Freakin Frog. There's even a restaurant called Burger Bar at Mandalay Place that has 20+ beers on tap. It should be a fun weekend. If anyone knows of any must-try places in Vegas, please let me know.

I'll be back on Monday with tales from Sin City and the long overdue Big Wood Festival recap. Also coming up in the near future (as in a week from Saturday): a visit to the West Side and Silver City Brewery.

Beer will be priority #1, but if we're in striking distance I'll make sure and check out the Pinball Hall...

I played a placed called "The Cooler Lounge" a few times in Vegas. I can't remember the beer selection, but I remember it being a really cool neighborhood/locals bar. A huge circular fireplace in the center of the room... They had a lot of RnR/garage stuff playing there. Who knows if it's still open, but it was a pretty cool place away from the Strip.

Yeah, I killed it since I never write there. I might start something new eventually. For now it's just beer and all non-beer stuff at [info]homucomestible.

I'm thinking of switching to the 100 pt. scale on my Listology list for 2008.

At least you're writing.

But, a change to the 100 point scale? Why are you possibly joining us lunatics?

The letter grades one has been frustrating (so many films I give B minuses to and no way to differentiate between two films a lot of the time even though one is better to me than the other). Figured I'd give the 100 a go.

Vegas is fucked, the beer there is mediocre and I'm glad to be home. But I'll go into greater detail...

I keep having visions of cowboys, strip malls and burnouts playing video slots. If I hadn't been staying with you, I might've seriously lost it. I probably would've stayed in a hotel room and watched my 42" plasma with a bucket of cold beer and a big-lunged escort. But I should amend the mediocre beer part by saying "except for the Tenaya Creek Imperial Stout, which was delicious." I also can't speak for the quality of Big Dog's.

Bingo was fun and Grilled Cheese Animal-style was a culinary highlight...

Best Beer in Vegas

If you want the highest quality selection of beer go off-strip just a bit (5-8 miles) and go to Rosemary's Restaurant (http://www.rosemarysrestaurant.com). They are somewhat of an upscale restaurant with amazing beers and their menu is even constructed for beer/food pairings.

Just a quick snapshot of their beer menu (see the rest on their website)
-Ayinger Celebrator
-Blanche de Chambly
-La Fin Du Monde
-Maudite
-North Coast Pranqster
-Sam Smith's Nut Brown
-SN Pale Ale and IPA
-All the Chimay's, Duvel, Orval, Rochefort, Westmalle

The food is AMAZING too.

Damn I see I didn't look at the date and I was thinking you were going this weekend. Oh well. Yeah other than Rosemary's the beer ain't that good there. The Monte Carlo pub use to have some ok ones, Hofbrauhaus is ok for some mediocre German lagers, but that's about it.

Steve...man, I wish I'd found out about Rosemary's. The local beer I had was pretty mediocre, but we did find a good beer bar called the Freakin Frog. They had 15 on tap (including Delirium Tremens, Chimay, Sierra Celebration, Anchor Old Foghorn and Drake's Triple IPA) and 700 in bottles. The bottle list was just ridiculous (but overpriced).

I've taken a look at the Freakin Frog website in the past... really wanted to go there a couple times but for some reason we just never went. The draught list looked Ok last time I checked it out but what yeah I remember that bottle list being ridiculously overpriced, which is maybe why I passed on it. I'll definitely have to give it a try next time I'm out there.
