Can't Taste Beer + Mighty Arrow + American Belgians

  • I now know the absolute worst thing about having a cold. It's not the stuffy head, sore throat, runny nose thing. It's the almost complete inability to taste beer! Despite my cold, I decided to split a bottle of Sierra Bigfoot last night and it was sad. All I could taste was some bitterness. The plugged nasal passages really made it impossible to get any kind of flavor. I might as well just drink macros until I can breathe freely again!

  • Was at my local grocery store the other night and saw a 12 pack from New Belgium that advertised a new beer available only in the 12-er: Mighty Arrow Pale Ale. Kind of sucks that you have to get the 12 to try it since the other 9 beers are 3 each of the Fat Tire, Mothership Wit and 1554. I guess I could always give away the Fat Tires and one or two Wits and drink the rest. But is it worth $14.99 to try Mighty Arrow?

  • Forgot to mention that my latest post at Metroblogging Seattle is up. It's on the American Belgian Fest at Collins Pub.

Hmmm, yeah, I've only seen a New Belgium Pale Ale once on tap at The Whistle Stop Ale House in Renton. Sadly, I didn't try it...

Get well soon!

i got yer mighty arrow right here. that's a mighty lame ploy to get you to buy nine beers that probably suck cold miner's teets. sorry you got the cold, stay dry and warm and you'll be fully tasting beers in no time. - James

The 1554's no slouch. The Mothership's okay, but I'm not all that into wit beers. It's the Fat Tire that I'm not good with. Maybe if they had the Tripel instead of the Fat Tire...

Don't throw out the Fat Tire by any means. It's a good beer and is made here in the town that I work (Fort Collins). The 1554 is also a great beer and is one of my favorite local brews. I can't really endorse the Mothership Wit as that is not one of my favorite styles. I haven't yet tried the new Mighty Arrow, but will do so next time I stop by the New Belgium Tasting Room.

Don't worry, I would never throw out perfectly good beer. If I didn't drink them myself, I'd find them a good home. I'm not a big fan of the Fat Tire, but I haven't had it in 3 year so maybe I should try it again. I like the 1554 (it's even better on tap) and the Mothership is okay but isn't really my favorite style either. I was just kind of wondering aloud if it's worth it to pay $15 to try a new beer when you're not super enthusiastic about the other beers it comes with.

I'm envious that you can pop into the NB Tasting room and drink stuff like La Folie or Le Terroir all the time...

The Mighty Arrow is a clean beer, and surprisingly comes in at 6% ABV. It has absolutley zero aftertaste, which I found strange. A good summertime I-just-mowed-the-grass-and-want-to-throw-back-a-pint-or-five beer. I enjoyed it enough to put it on tap at my place. Good flavoring, but not a very pronounced beer. A good sneaker.

Finally tried one on tap here on Saturday. Only bad thing was it was after drinking at the Cask Fest for 4 hrs. I don't think I was tasting much at that point. All I can say is that it didn't suck. I'll have to try one as the first beer of the day. Maybe tonight if it's still on at Collins Pub.

Noticed you put your tap list on the myspace page last week. Is that something you try to do regularly? I wish more beer places did it, but I guess it's cool to just go in and see what they have and be surprised.

I've had the taplist on as soon as we opened...and Myspace's blog tools made it the reason I did and do. So simple and easy to maintain. I update it every time we rotate a new handle on. I've missed it by a day or two, but it's usually spot on.

I tried your Mighty Arrow. I'm not much of a beer drinker but I'll tell you, I would be if I could find this stuff any where. It is outstanding beer. Mild, not bitter, no skunky taste. Tell me where I can get it. No matter what it costs, or how many I have to buy, I want more!!!!! Please let me know where I can find it in the Medford area. Thanx!!!! walbob@clearwire.net.
