a good beating's really where it's at

i don't know, either i'm getting old or i don't drink enough at shows these days. lately, my tolerance for people pushing and shoving to get to the front has gone way down. in the past, i just accepted it as part of seeing a band. nowadays, i just get pissed off and want to punch people in the face. of course, i don't do this...but damn, it's tempting. now i'm not talking about getting shoved around by people dancing or slamming or moshing or whatever. you make a choice to be up in that and if you're there you deal with it. but when you're just standing off to the side enjoying the band and someone pushes by you from behind and does it in an aggressive way, it's fucking infuriating.
anyway, we saw some bands at cafe du nord last night and it was decent despite my dislike of big crowds and the assholes that make them up. seeing the epoxies was the highlight of the evening. the singer was pretty charismatic, the rest of the band was entertaining and the songs were good in a '77 punk meets new wave vein. they ended their set with an energetic cover of adam ant's "beat my guest" and the crowd went apeshit. we didn't stick around for the phantom limbs. part of me regrets not seeing them, but we were tired and had had enough for one night.
it was the first time i'd seen a show at cafe du nord and i guess the place is okay. the room where the bands play is a little too narrow (which makes avoiding the from-behind pushers and up-front moshers difficult) and there's absolutely no air to breathe, but overall it's alright. with all the clubs that have closed in SF over the last few years, it's good that they're filling the void by booking rock shows there.
