it seemed like the natural thing to do

thanks to the new fridays off schedule, i got to enjoy a four-day weekend. hard to believe that it's over already. seems like it was just thursday a few minutes ago. unfortunately, one of the prices i'm paying for enjoying four-day work weeks is enduring a lot of horseshit having to do with working for the state of california.

on wednesday, my first day as a state employee, i did the obligatory newbie paperwork shuffle with HR. there was the usual information to fill out like who to call in an emergency, who to appoint as beneficiaries for insurance payoff if we croak, etc. then they presented us with a piece of paper containing an oath to defend both the constitution of the state of california and of the united states. as i read it over, i wondered what would happen if i didn't sign. getting near the bottom of the sheet, i was informed in fine print that i wouldn't receive benefits from the state if i didn't sign. the whole thing pissed me off, but i signed the damn thing because i'm only going in for a 6-9 month contract and it's not like i'm going to have to live up to the oath. i work in the friggin library, ya know?

on my days off, i did a lot of lazing around the house. i did manage to get out for a few hours on friday when sabina came up from carmel. we hit amoeba, she bought a shitload of stuff and then dropped me off an a street corner to go have a swanky dinner in north beach with her traveling companions. i had no money in my pockets and had to peddle my ass to get bus fare home. just kidding bina...

on saturday, i dragged francesca with me to japantown, where we went to the maruwa market and bought some sake to be consumed with yet more samurai movies. now that i've found out that le video has every samurai movie ever released, i've been making the long trek to that part of town and plunking down a lot of money to see all the zatoichi and sleepy eyes of death films. to mix things up a bit, tonight i watched a different kind of japanese film called cure. it was great until the end, which was either full of meaning but incomprehensible to me or total bullshit thrown out by the director becuause he couldn't figure out how to wrap things up. i don't necessarily think total closure is necessary in a film and sometimes it's cool for there to be a lot of things open to interpretation, but it's nice to have at least a little something to grab onto. if anyone else has seen this film and knows what's up, let me know.

so it's back to work tomorrow. normally, i'd be depressed as hell. but shit, i only have to make it through four days and it's 3 days of freedom.
