movies, movies, movies...

a lot of intriguing movies coming out this fall, both mainstream and not so mainstream. on top of that there's all the cool stuff going on at the castro (the kurosawa/mifune retrospective), the dark wave horror series at the roxie, the mario bava retrospective at the yerba buena and pretty much everything at the PFA in berkeley. if you like movies, you couldn't pick a better place to live (except maybe NY or LA and i ain't living in either). it's one of the things that keeps me here when there are plenty of reasons to move elsewhere.
anyway, one of the more mainstream films i'm building up a little anticipation over is roger avary's adaptation of bret easton ellis's the rules of attraction. you might remember avary as the co-writer of a little film called pulp fiction and the writer/director of a flawed, but nonetheless cool movie called killing zoe. i've been reading a bit about rules and it sounds crazy. i never read the book, but it's basically about these new england liberal arts college kids who drink, drug, screw and generally shit all over each other. the main character is the brother of patrick bateman from american psycho and he's played by the dawson's creek dude. in this movie, i'm hearing that the dawson's creek dude has an anal sex scene (with him on the receiving end) and that fred savage (the kid from wonder years) has a scene where he shoots up in his underwear. even if the movie sucks (and i'm hearing this is not the case), it sounds like it has the potential to be one of those cult-type guilty pleasures.
check out roger avary's journal which has a bizarre series of entries about the controversy over a high score by the director of tron on the old school video game battlezone. it also has avary's feelings on the cutting that was done to rules of attraction to ensure it got an R rating.
what movies are you folks looking forward to this fall?
