Something is wrong with me. I think maybe aliens have taken over my body. Yesterday I woke up on time and got to work 20 minutes before I usually do. Today I got up at 6am and went running with Cesca. I repeat...I went running. This is not normal early morning behavior for me. Typically, I hit the snooze 2-3 times, take a long shower and end up shoving breakfast down my throat and cruising into work 10-15 minutes late. I'm not sure what's going on here. Either I'm turning over a new leaf or the alien body snatching thing really happened.
I've been pretty lax about listening to those 150+ cds that I talked about last week. I'd gotten off to such a good start too. I did listen to two more letter A bands at the end of last week/beginning of this week. The first was Go Blue, Go Die by Agitated, a hardcore band from Cleveland circa the early 80's. It's pretty generic stuff with the usual lyrics about hating society and cops, etc. I probably would've enjoyed this a lot more 10 years ago, but it just seems so boring now. I still listen to some of the old school hardcore stuff like Minor Threat and Poison Idea, but so much of the rest of it is so bland that I can't muster any enthusiasm for it. This one goes in the sell pile.
It's strange that the other record I listened to is by a metal band that isn't doing anything new or innovative yet I loved it and have been listening to it for days. Does this mean that I'm really a metalhead and not a punk? Maybe all the metal I listened to as an early teenager has forever tainted my musical tastes. At least I'm not growing my hair long yet. Anyway, the record in question is Slaughter of the Soul by the Swedish melodic death metal band, At the Gates. I'm not sure why I like this record so much. It's pretty standard stuff with the usual growling death metal vocals and blistering tempos. It reminds me of Slayer's Reign in Blood, but more melodic. I guess the melodic element is what makes it stand out. That and the two quieter, instrumentals. Evidently, this record was pretty big when it came out in Sweden in 1995. It even got nominated for a Swedish Grammy. This one's a keeper. Along with Opeth, Entombed and In Flames, my Swedish metal collection is growing.
